Curly Hair, Don’t Care: How to Rock Curtain Bangs

If you’ve looked up hairstyle inspiration posts on Pinterest recently, you’ve probably seen tons of pictures of women rocking bangs. While bangs aren’t necessarily new, the infamous “curtain bang” look is beginning to take off and surge in popularity. Tons of celebrities like Katy Perry, Drew Barrymore, and Rihanna have been rocking the style. It’s even beginning to appear more in fashion magazines!

While you tend to see it on women with straighter hair textures, that doesn’t mean that we curly girls can’t hop on the trend and rock it too! They’re the perfect way to add some fluffy lightness to thick curls without weighing them down or making them look stiff. They are gorgeous when paired with curly hair because they blend easily into our bouncy curls and create a playful, flirty look!

What Are Curtain Bangs?

Curtain bangs, also known as “fringe bangs,” are bangs that frame the face on both sides. They tend to be a bit longer than traditional bangs and are cut into the shape of an arc where the shorter pieces are towards the center and gradually become longer towards the outside. Most of the time, a curtain bang is parted at the center. They tend to be a bit longer, ranging from two to three inches thick, and typically fall directly over your eyebrows. The result is a chic curtain-like effect that perfectly highlights your eyes and face!

They look great on everyone, and their soft and feathery texture makes them extremely easy to style.

Now that we know what they are, let’s get down to business — how can we make them work for us? From the proper cut to the right products and techniques, I’ve got you covered. Check out these curly hair tips so that you can rock the curtain bang trend no matter how curly your locks may be!

What Should I Know Before Getting Curtain Bangs?

The safest way to get the perfect curtain bangs is to go to a professional stylist! They can help you determine the ideal length and thickness. However, if you’re a risk-taker and plan to cut your hair yourself, here are some key things to note.

Know your face shape!

Just like with makeup or even choosing glasses, it’s crucial to know and understand your face shape when deciding to get any haircut or style. Something that works well on your best friend might not be as flattering on you!

If you have an oval face shape, the length of your fringe should be determined by the length of your forehead to maintain the natural balance you already have. If you have a round face shape, go for a thinner wispier style to add more sharpness to your softer features! Curlys with a heart-shaped face should opt for a bang that’s not too blunt so it can balance a thinner jawline and wider forehead!

If your face is more rectangular, longer curtain bangs that hit right at or just below the cheekbones will soften your defined features! If your face is squarer, stick to a shorter fringe to make your beautiful high cheekbones pop!

Keep the overall length of your hair in mind!

While curtain bangs tend to work best on curly girls with a bit more length, they still look adorable on shorter ones! The key is to have your bangs trimmed closer to the brow to prevent it from looking like a bowl-cut hairstyle!

Understand how much your hair shrinks!

Shrinkage is one of the unfortunate realities when it comes to curly hair! Understanding how much your hair shrinks once it dries is crucial when cutting your hair! After all, there’s nothing worse than cutting while your hair is wet, only for it to shrink up to half its length within a few hours! Go easy with the scissors. It’s always better to start with a little more length. You can always trim it a bit more later!

How To Style Curtain Bangs

I love curtain bangs because they’re so effortlessly chic and playful. They’re also versatile as they’re the perfect complement to a messy look or an elegant pinned-up style! Because your beautiful curly fringe is front and center, it’s essential to ensure they’re looking their best! So whether you’re throwing the rest of your hair up in a messy bun or letting your hair out to play, it’s crucial to make sure your bangs are styled. I recommend using a nice curling cream to define the texture of your coils and elongate them! Here’s some of my favorite go-to styles for curly bangs!

Curly Up-Do

Effortless casual updos like buns, top knots, and ponytails are perfect to pair with your new curtain bangs! It’s the ideal way to get out the door quickly while achieving a more elevated chic look!

Loose

Let your curls do all the talking for you. Curtain bangs are perfect for breaking up the overall mass of your hair, adding a lovely fluffy volume to your hair. In addition, the fringe will allow your beautiful features to stand out, so it doesn’t get lost within a sea of curls. Plus, it creates a stunning and unique silhouette that only us curly girls can achieve naturally!

Rock those bangs!

Don’t shy away from curtain bangs! It’s such a wonderful, versatile style that looks stunning on anyone! They work with casual or glam looks and will let your beautiful features shine! So, if you’re looking for a simple way to shake things up, give curtain bangs a try!
